Details, Details . . .

In our previous post, we introduced you to the three industrial sewing machines that we have been gifted and have become integral parts of our studio. We're thrilled with their high-quality performance and durability. We couldn't wait to start using them. There was just one thing. The tables that came with each machine were just...ugly.
Quality is key at DandyLion, we want even our work surfaces to reflect quality materials and attention to detail. The pressed particle board and cream or mint green laminate tops were uninspiring at best. We knew we could do better.
60+ Hours to Get it Right
After more than 60 hours of planning, production, finishing, and installation—and we aren't quite finished—each machine will have taken up residence in a hand-crafted handsome four-foot work table. We began by prototyping the table tops. Each machine has different dimensions and mounting requirements, so its table top is cut specifically for its measurements and optimal function.Â
We then selected sustainable solid walnut stock for the tops. Each top required approximately six hours to cut and hand finish to a satin, low-luster surface. We also made an 11-foot production table that functions as the primary landing zone for fabric bolts, pillow sleeves in process, and samples. The production table alone—with no special cut-outs or functionality requirements—took 12 hours to make.
The most challenging part of the project was re-installing each sewing machine. We had to take each one apart to position it accurately on its table top. Along the way, we fine-tuned the fits and ensured that our sewing workflow would be as efficient as possible. Each re-installation took a little over eight hours.
Why?
Why did we do all of this for a flat, four-foot piece of wood to work on? Because details matter. When we create a product, it's more than just the quality of fabric, in the case of our textile products. Every stitch matters because stitch quality makes a difference in how long the product will last. A solid work surface is more stable, so that the machines are precisely level and operate with minimal friction. Hand-finished surfaces allow fabric to move freely without hanging up or compromising seam straightness. And working on a beautiful surface is just a more enjoyable experience for all of us.Â
Most of our customers will never see these details. That's OK. They will tangibly experience our attention to detail and quality in every DandyLion product that they choose. That's what matters most to us.Â
